Montgomery County,
Texas was the third county formed under the Republic of Texas and today is the 32nd
fastest growing county in the United States. This beautifully wooded area is located
just north of the Harris County area. With a population of 344,000 residents,
Montgomery County includes the cities of Conroe, Montgomery, The Woodlands, Porter,
Shenandoah, Willis and many new planned communities. The area offers amenities such
as fishing, camping, golfing and cultural events, all set against the stunning
backdrop of the beautiful Piney Woods. Genuine Texas hospitality is a way of
life...where pride in community permeates family, work, and play - all those
activities that give meaning to life.
Just 40 minutes north of Houston, Conroe is close to the city but far from ordinary.
Beautiful pine forests, unique history, eclectic shopping, fun festivals, challenging
golf, comfortable accommodations and the 22,000-acre Lake Conroe add up to the perfect
place to call home. The city of Conroe has 36,811 resident and the entire Lake
Conroe area has a population of 103,638.
Conroe is the seat of Montgomery County and is situated next to Lake Conroe below the
Sam Houston National Forest. The oil revenues and population influx of the 1930s
lend to the economic vitality of the community. It briefly claimed more millionaires
per capita than any other town in the United States. With the construction of I-45,
increasing numbers of Houstonians took up residence on the margins of Conroe. Lake
Conroe was created in the late 1960s and early 1970s, seven miles northwest on the
West Fork of the San Jacinto River, this further stimulating local growth. Conroe
is also home to Montgomery College.
Montgomery was the original seat of Montgomery County and is near the southwestern
edge of Sam Houston National Forest, 15 miles west of Conroe and 50 miles northwest
of Houston. Montgomery is one of the oldest towns in Texas beginning as a trading
post in 1826. Montgomery is recognized as the birthplace of the Texas Lone Star
Flag. Real estate, ranching, and oil underpin the economy of Montgomery. The town
of Montgomery is a "walking village" with a lovely preserved 19th Century Historic
Downtown District, as well as many fine retail shops, restaurants and local
attractions. Montgomery is a charming, small, friendly community with a population
498 residents.
The city of The Woodlands is a planned wooded community and has become one of the
best selling communities in Texas. With a modest population of 55,649 residents,
this strikingly affordable city is located less than 30 minutes away from Houston.
The Woodlands has a perfect balance of Texas woods along with modern conveniences
that creates a perfect blend of lifestyle and Southern culture. It also has the
affordability and warmth that you would find in a small town.
Porter is located in on US 59, north of the Houston metropolitan area and has a
population of 17,000 people. Porter's most famous resident has probably been Robert
L. Crippen, United States Navy. Crippen became a NASA astronaut in 1969 and was a
pilot for the space shuttle Columbia in 1981.
Shenandoah, an active, upscale small city located in the East Texas pine forest just
35 miles north of Houston, and 20 minutes from Bush Intercontinental Airport,
straddles Interstate 45, one of Texas' most traveled arteries and the life line of
Houston's fabled growth. With a growing population, the city is bustling with new
commercial development. Residential Shenandoah is still a peaceful, comfortable
neighborhood with low taxes, good schools and only minutes from shopping, dining,
entertainment, and world-class medical care. Dozens of public and private golf
courses and the resort area of Lake Conroe are within twenty minutes. Houston is
just a 30-minute commute.
The township of Willis sprang up when the Houston and Great Northern Railroad decided
to run a track from Houston to Chicago and the Willis brothers donated their land in
1870 to the railroad. Willis won the county seat from Montgomery in 1874, however,
the courthouse was never moved to Willis and in 1889 was moved permanently to Conroe.
The tobacco industry plays a vital role in Willis' history. Around the turn of the
century, there were several cigar factories and tobacco was the number one crop grown
for many years. In fact, Willis cigars won first prize at the Columbia World
Exposition and were popular throughout the world. At the demise of the tobacco
industry following the imposition of tariffs, Willis returned to its first
industries - timber and farming.
Montgomery County offers residents an exceptional lifestyle with an array of first
class shopping, dining, housing and entertainment choices that leaves newcomers
wondering where to start first. Housing is affordable with the median cost for a
single family home is $140,700.
