The Lake Conroe area within Texas is considered one of the fastest growing areas in the nation. Lake Conroe is on the west fork of the San Jacinto River. The lake has over 22,000 acres of surface water, is 26 miles long, 6 miles wide at the broadest point and has 157 miles of shoreline. The lake is bordered on the north by Sam Houston National Forest, which provides an abundance of wildlife such as deer, several species of birds, even alligators. The lake has some of the best fishing around with diverse species such as blue, channel and flathead catfish, striped, white and large-mouth bass, crappie and small-mouth buffalo. Visitors to the Sam Houston National Forest can use the Stubblefield Lake Campground, a fully developed camping area. If you prefer primitive camping, Kelly's Pond Campground is an excellent spot. Cagle Recreation Area and Scott's Ridge provide boat launches, and the 140-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail is a fabulous spot for hiking enthusiasts. The trail is divided into five loops that can offer a multitude of day hikes or long, overnight backpacking trips. There are 47 full RV hook-ups and tent camping sites, as well as multi-use trails for horses, ATV's, mountain and dirt bikes.

At one time the economy was primarily driven by timber, farming, and oil, as Conroe was the third greatest oil center in the United States. Conroe has seen much growth and prosperity since its humble beginnings in 1870. During the past twenty years, the Lake Conroe area economy has greatly diversified. No longer dependent on a handful of industries, Conroe has attracted a wealth of manufacturing, retail, health care, biotechnology, construction, and tourism companies. The area is just 30 miles from Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston with service provided by 21 passenger airlines to 110 U.S. cities and 20 countries throughout the world. The median household income is $50,832.

Before venturing into actively attracting new business and residents, the area first passed a half-cent sales tax for incentives and improvement of the infrastructure. The Lake Conroe area made sure they had an accurate inventory of properties - with prices - and developed a 470-acre platted industrial park with roads, signage and utilities. They also assessed the community as a whole to gain a comprehensive understanding of the components of the local economy and their strengths and weaknesses. As a result this is a community that has planned and is ready for continued growth.

Some of the finest residential developments in the country have been developed around the picturesque shores and wooded terrain surrounding the lake. Throughout the Lake Conroe area there are a variety of activities, attractions and events. In addition to the exciting camping, boating and fishing in the area, golf is a popular hobby for area residents. There are eight public and eight private golf courses designed by world famous architects. Dining and dancing aboard the Southern Empress paddlewheel riverboat is also a thrill. It would not be Texas without rodeos, community barbeques, horse shows, gun shows, and holiday parades. Favorite annual events for the whole family include Lobersterfest, Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival, Montgomery Old West Fest, and the Willis Birthday Blast.

The Lake Conroe area has an exciting art scene. The Crighton Theatre is a beautifully restored vaudeville-era theater that is now home to stage plays, musical performances, dance recitals, symphony performances and the acclaimed Sounds of Texas Music Series. Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion is a magnificent open-air amphitheater featuring live entertainment from classical to popular music. Heritage Museum of Montgomery County Exhibits featuring Montgomery County's development as a major oil and lumber center, as well as exhibits on Conroe, Montgomery, Willis and Texas history. Heritage Place Amphitheater Outdoor amphitheater features a summer concert series and year-round events. Also the Texas Arts Venue hosts changing exhibitions in a variety of mediums and live musical entertainment.

Shopping enthusiasts will love The Conroe Outlet Center just off Interstate 45 on League Line Road, immediately to the north of Conroe. The center features over 70 designed outlets with the top names in fashion at an average of 40 percent off retail prices. The center offers designer boutiques and incredible savings can be found on items which include sportswear, lingerie, shoes, toys, leather goods, crystal and china.

Education throughout the Lake Conroe area is outstanding. The Conroe Independent School District serves the Conroe community. Montgomery Independent School District is responsible for Lake Conroe and Montgomery and the Willis Independent School District provides a top-notch educational environment for students within the community of Willis.
